The Legendary Legs of Du Xinwu

This comic strip is based on the biographical article of the same name from "Sports Culture and History" magazine. Du Xinwu was a renowned martial artist, famous both in China and abroad, and was known as the "Natural Hero." In his youth, he traveled across China, combating evil and bringing peace to the people. Later, driven by a patriotic desire to save his country, he traveled across the sea to Japan to study. In Japan, he joined the Tongmenghui (Revolutionary Alliance) and served as a bodyguard for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, risking his life and gaining international fame. After the Xinhai Revolution (1911 Revolution), he served as a consultant in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. After the liberation of China (1949), he became a member of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference until his death in 1953.

  1. In the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), bandits rampaged in western Hunan Province, causing immense suffering among the people. To defend themselves, the practice of martial arts became widespread among the populace.

2. In the towering mountains of Cili County, there was a village called Yanbantian. In 1869, a son was born to the Du family, named Xinwu. Du Xinwu was exceptionally intelligent from a young age, loved to read poetry and books, and in his spare time, he practiced martial arts with the adults.

3. When he was nine years old, Du Xinwu was on his way to a private school. As he walked along a narrow paddy dike that only allowed one person to pass, he saw an old man shuffling ahead. He called out to the old man, "Can you walk a bit faster?" The old man didn't turn his head, but replied, "If you want to go fast, grab my pigtail and don't let go."

4. Du Xinwu was eager to hurry, so without thinking, he firmly grabbed the old man's pigtail. The old man said, "Don't let go!"

5. With a flick of his head, Du Xinwu was involuntarily flung into the air. Before he could even understand what was happening, he landed right in front of the old man.

6. Du Xinwu was a perceptive young man and realized that the old man's pigtail was formidable, indicating deep martial arts skills. He knelt down on the ground and pleaded, "Please, old master, take me as your disciple." Seeing his sincerity and exceptional intelligence, the old man pondered for a long time before agreeing.

7. The old man was named Yan Ke. He was not only highly skilled in martial arts but also well-versed in classical literature. Due to the corruption he witnessed in officialdom, he had returned to his hometown to live as a recluse. Under his tutelage, two years passed, and Du Xinwu made great progress in both academics and martial arts. When he sparred with his neighbors, no one could defeat him.

8. Yan Ke saw Du Xinwu's rapid progress in martial arts and felt that he had a great future ahead, so he decided to introduce him to a more accomplished master. One day during practice, he told Du Xinwu, "When you have time, go and visit Gaizi Mountain. It's a very mysterious place!"
